Hi, I’m Kathy, and I’m so glad you’re here to learn about Down Home Dish! My love for home cooking began on a small farm in Central Indiana, where simple, homemade meals were just part of everyday life. We grew a large garden each year, preserved the harvest through canning and freezing, and rarely relied on convenience foods. From an early age, I learned that good food starts with fresh ingredients, a little patience, and recipes made with love.
How My Cooking Journey Began
By the time I was in my early teens, I was already helping prepare meals for our family. I spent countless afternoons baking cookies to keep our cookie jar full during long, snowy Indiana winters, and I learned to make comforting meals like meatloaf, chili, and pot roast completely from scratch—often without a recipe. Those early experiences taught me that some of the best family recipes come from practice, tradition, and a willingness to simply get in the kitchen and cook.

Over 40 years of Cooking Experience
After getting married more than 40 years ago, I continued adding new recipes to my growing recipe box. Some became family traditions that we still enjoy today, while others were inspired by friends, travels, seasonal ingredients, and plenty of experimentation in the kitchen. Every recipe tells a story and carries a memory of gathering around the table with the people I love most.
These days, my kitchen revolves around making family meals both delicious and practical. I enjoy weekly meal prep, preparing breakfast favorites and make-ahead dishes that help make busy mornings and weeknight dinners easier. I believe that a little planning can go a long way toward enjoying more homemade meals without spending hours in the kitchen every day.

After moving to West Tennessee, I’ve also fallen in love with Southern-inspired cooking. From comforting casseroles and hearty side dishes to classic Southern flavors, I’ve enjoyed blending those traditions with the Midwestern recipes I grew up making. The result is a collection of comforting, approachable recipes that are perfect for everyday family meals, holidays, potlucks, and special occasions.
Here at Down Home Dish, you’ll find easy, dependable recipes made with everyday ingredients, practical cooking tips, seasonal favorites, comforting casseroles, homemade desserts, slow cooker meals, air fryer recipes, and classic Southern-inspired dishes.
